Services & Specialties

Training after 40 should be more intentional — focused on building functional strength, improving mobility and balance, reducing aches and pains, and feeling more confident in your body.
My approach combines weight training, Pilates-informed movement, flexibility & core exercise, and practical conditioning to help you build lean muscle and bone density, improve recovery, and stay active for the long term.

Flexibility, mobility, and core strength are essential parts of a healthy body, but they are often overlooked or under-trained in the gym.
When these foundations are weak, the body can start to compensate — leading to stiffness, poor posture, imbalances, pain, injuries, or excessive wear and tear on the joints.
This training can stand alone or support your current exercise, sport, or fitness routine. The goal is simple: move better, recover better, reduce unnecessary strain, and build a stronger foundation for long-term performance.
For athletes and active people, this work helps you stay prepared, resilient, and ready to perform.
For everyday exercisers, I’ll teach you the key exercises, movement strategies, and points of awareness that matter most for your body and goals — so you can use them for life.

Improve body composition, and develop lean muscle with a sustainable training and nutrition approach.
This program combines progressive strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and practical Precision Nutrition guidance to help you reduce body fat, improve muscle tone, and feel more confident in your body.
With 1-on-1 personal training, we can also use precise technique, exercise selection, and smart programming to shape your physique in a balanced way — helping you look stronger, leaner, and better proportioned without random workouts or extreme dieting.
-
If pain, injury, stiffness, or weakness has made you hesitant to train, this is where we start.
My professional specialty is helping adults build strength after physio, improve movement quality, and train with proper technique — so your body can move onto an upward health trajectory.
This approach blends Pilates-informed movement, progressive weight training, mobility, posture, and core strength to help you train with less strain, more control, and greater confidence.
When appropriate, we can also integrate exercises from your physical therapist into a low-impact, full-body training program — helping you continue building strength, stability, and better movement in the gym.
If you’re dealing with weakness, imbalance, stiffness, poor posture, or movement limitations, I’ll help you build a stronger foundation with precision, care, and intelligent progression.
-
Training designed around the physical demands of your sport, activity, or performance goal. Your program can combine strength, power, mobility, balance, coordination, conditioning, and injury-prevention work (prehab) to help you move more efficiently, perform with greater confidence, and stay resilient throughout training and competition.

Nutrition coaching designed to help you feel healthier, eat better, increase energy, and build habits that actually fit your life.
Using the Precision Nutrition approach, we focus on practical, sustainable changes rather than strict diets, complicated meal plans, or short-term fixes. Together, we’ll look at your current habits, goals, lifestyle, training schedule, and challenges, then build a realistic strategy you can maintain.
Coaching may include:
Improving meal structure and food quality
Increasing protein, fibre, and nutrient intake
Supporting fat loss or healthy weight management
Managing hunger, cravings, and emotional eating
Planning around work, travel, family, and social events
Building consistency without aiming for perfection
Connecting your nutrition with your strength and fitness goals
This service is ideal for adults who know what they “should” be doing but need structure, accountability, and a clear plan they can follow.
Nutrition coaching can be added to your personal training program at Fitness First St Leonards or booked as a separate consultation.

Matthew Ryan Carney
Hi, I’m Matthew, and I’m excited to be part of the community and training team at Fitness First St Leonards.
I really enjoy getting to know folks in the gym, and talking about fitness and wellness. I also teach Mat Pilates at 10:30am on Wednesdays at Fitness First St. Leonards, so come join me for this traditional STOTT Pilates class.
It’s focused on core strength, balance, mobility, and mind-body connection. If you’ve been looking for a class that promotes recovery while helping you get stronger, this is for you.
